When it comes to traditional vs. electric dental devices, you’ll have people on one side who swear by their electric toothbrushes and waterpiks, and those on the other side who just don’t think it makes a difference. But what are the real pros and cons of going electric, versus sticking with traditional?

Electric

Electric toothbrushes can be a time saver, as you can clean your teeth thoroughly in less time than using a manual brush. Depending on the kind of toothbrush you have, they can also do a better cleaning job in general, removing more plaque and bacteria. Electric toothbrushes are also more “fun” to use, which can be a good thing if you find yourself reluctant about brushing. Because of this, they’re a great option for children who sometimes need to be enticed into brushing their teeth!

A huge benefit of electric toothbrushes is that they allow those who are less mobile or dexterous to still brush their teeth properly.

Waterpik water flossers are the electric option when it comes to flossing. Waterpiks are great at targeting hard to reach places, and allow for those who have difficulty flossing to maintain their oral health. However, they are not as effective at removing plaque as regular floss is.

The biggest downside to electric dental devices is their cost. Even a cheap electric toothbrush is significantly more expensive than a manual one, and the higher end ones can get quite pricey. You also have to regularly replace their heads, which can also be expensive depending on what kind of toothbrush you have.

The force of the electric toothbrush or waterpik can also be too much for those with sensitive teeth and gums.

Traditional

Manual toothbrushes give you more control over the force you exert and the speed at which you brush your teeth, which is better for those with any sensitivity. They are far more cost effective as well and are simple to use.

Manual toothbrushes do however, require better brushing technique and more time spent brushing to ensure you’re not missing any spots. Similarly, traditional floss is quite effective at removing plaque and other debris from the teeth, but many people find it difficult or tedious to use, or may not be using the proper technique.

No matter what kind of dental device you are using, the most important thing is that you use it. So if you know you have trouble keeping up with regular flossing, invest in a waterpik! Or if you know you prefer a manual toothbrush, even though it takes a bit more time, stick with manual. There are pros and cons either way, but the most important thing is finding the dental devices that allow you to take the best possible care of your teeth.
