Questions about Porcelain Veneers

In Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are very thin slices of porcelain that has been shaped to fit over your teeth. Porcelain veneers are made of translucent ceramic porcelain and so closely resemble tooth enamel that they look quite natural.

What are porcelain veneers used for?

Our team of experienced cosmetic dentists at Willow Dental recommends porcelain veneers to repair stained, chipped, cracked or broken teeth or to fill small gaps between teeth. Porcelain veneers are an excellent way to give you an attractive smile.

Are there advantages to porcelain veneers?

There are many advantages to porcelain veneers.

  • They are durable and last for many years
  • They look natural
  • They are stain resistant
  • Newer porcelain veneers are thinner requiring little or no removal of natural enamel
  • The procedure is painless
  • Less tooth sensitivity after the procedure
  • Some porcelain veneers are removable

Are there any risks to having porcelain veneers?

There is generally less risk to having porcelain veneers than having crowns placed on your teeth. Some types of porcelain veneers require removal of a thin layer of enamel prior to applying the veneer making the process irreversible. Also, removal of any amount of enamel may cause tooth sensitivity for a short time following placement.

However, newer products require little or no enamel removal, so the procedure does not add to your tooth sensitivity, and leaves your teeth intact. These veneers can be removed later, if necessary.

Although porcelain veneers are strong, they, like natural tooth enamel, can chip or crack, requiring replacement. Veneers may require replacement after ten years or so.

Are porcelain veneers difficult to care for?

Although porcelain veneers are more stain resistant than natural enamel, you will still need to care for them in much the same way as your natural teeth. Oral hygiene typically includes daily brushing and flossing. Avoiding substances that stain enamel will keep them beautiful along with regular checkups and cleanings. Red wine, coffee, tobacco and several medications can still stain them. Since your adjacent natural teeth tend to stain more easily than your porcelain veneers, you may need to whiten your natural teeth if they begin to discolor.

Habits like nail biting or chewing on ice or hard candy may cause veneers to wear down or chip. Dental veneers, like natural teeth, can be damaged during contact sports. Regular dental checkups will identify any caries that might develop under the veneer so that they can be treated quickly.
