Periodontal Therapy

In Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario

If your gums are red and bleeding, it is likely that you have gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Tissues and bone that hold your teeth in place may be destroyed and cause tooth loss. Periodontal disease is a major cause of tooth loss especially over age 30.

The state of periodontal disease known as gingivitis is when biofilm, the sticky plaque on your teeth, can cause your gums to bleed, which releases toxins into your bloodstream. A more serious condition called periodontitis means that this biofilm has spread below the gumline into the periodontal pockets. This is the space formed when the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth. A normal pocket depth is one to three mm, but pockets that are deeper than this make it impossible for you to clean out the bacteria and debris at the bottom of them with routine brushing and flossing.

The Dental Team at Willow Dental takes your overall health very seriously. We understand that there is a connection between your oral health and your general health. Serious health issues including heart disease are related to periodontal disease through the mouth and body connection. You can avoid periodontal disease through regular brushing, flossing and rinsing, and through regular hygiene visits at Willow Dental.

If you already have some level of periodontitis, we can treat you to get you back to optimum health.

Laser Periodontal Therapy

Willow Dental also uses laser therapy to treat your periodontitis. Using lasers allows us to target the specific areas of your gums without affecting the surrounding tissue. The laser is used to kill the bacteria that causes gum disease and can seal blood vessels and nerve endings during your procedure. This means less bleeding, swelling, and pain. It also allows us to perform the procedure with little to no anesthetic.

Willow Dental has invested in laser treatment for periodontitis so that we can give you the very best care. As technology improves it allows us to improve our dental procedures with your comfort and health in mind.

If you need periodontal therapy to help with your periodontitis or gingivitis, or have questions about how laser therapy works in our office, please contact our trained dental hygienists at Willow Dental to schedule an appointment.
