Dental Implants vs. Dentures

In Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario

At Willow Dental Associates, we offer both dental implants and dentures as options to replace your missing teeth. While both will provide you with an effective remedy to your dental problem, we generally recommend dental implants over dentures for all patients who are suitable implant candidates. We believe this restoration provides the best possible solution to missing teeth.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are made of a titanium post with an artificial tooth secured at its top. New procedures make it possible for the Toronto cosmetic dentist at Willow Dental Associates to place the implant root and cap over the space immediately after extracting a tooth. This method replaces earlier procedures that involved cutting through the gum tissue and drilling a hole for the implant post. Dental implants are:

  • Permanent rigid replacements for your natural teeth
  • Maintained with good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, as are natural teeth
  • More comfortable than dentures
  • More natural looking and feeling than dentures
  • A highly stable and durable restoration

Dental implants are an oral surgery procedure that requires sufficient bone density in the jaw to hold the implant securely.  There are various procedures to help increase bone density for certain patients who lack the initial density. In  situations where a patient is not a candidate for implants, we may recommend dentures as an alternative.

Dentures

Dentures have been the solution for missing teeth for many generations. They can be made to replace a complete or partial arch. By filling out the mouth, they also prevent facial muscles from sagging, and give a more youthful appearance.

However, our Toronto dentists feel that dentures are less effective than dental implants for several reasons:

  • They are more prone to breakage than dental implants
  • The pressure you can apply while eating is far less than with implants
  • They are prone to slippage, resulting in speech problems and difficulty chewing

Therefore, we generally only recommend dentures for patients who lack the necessary bone structure to support a dental implant.

At Willow Dental, we are committed to our patients’ best dental health and invite you to please contact our Toronto cosmetic dentists today for a complete evaluation of how best to restore your missing teeth.
