Sedation Options for Dental Implants

In Mississauga, Ontario

Sedation dentistry is ideal for helping people with dental anxieties to get the care they need to maintain or restore a beautiful smile. Dental implants are a great example. In truth, the discomfort associated with placing dental implants is not as significant as most people think, but the thought of the procedure can induce anxiety. Sedation dentistry allows us to help you overcome your anxiety to get the dental implants you need to replace a missing tooth or teeth.

If your dental anxiety is keeping you from getting dental implants, please contact Willow Dental today to learn about the options for anxiety-free dentistry offered at our Toronto-area office.

Dental Implants and Dental Anxiety

People with dental anxiety may be more likely to lose teeth. Their anxiety often keeps them from getting the preventative care required to keep their natural teeth, so they may lose their teeth to periodontal disease or infection of the root. A dental implant is a powerful treatment that can reverse the damage done by previous failures in care and stop the progression of damage through the mouth.

Unfortunately, dental anxiety is often a self-fulfilling prophecy. Sufferers avoid dental treatment until they have a serious problem requiring significant treatment that then reinforces their anxiety.  Using sedation dentistry for dental implants can be an important step in treatment because it allows you to break the cycle of dental anxiety and get a second chance at taking care of your teeth so you have worry-free visits to the dentist.

Sedation Options for Dental Implants

Sedation is different from anesthesia. Anesthesia prevents you from feeling pain, which we supply for all our patients. Sedation prevents you from feeling anxiety, though it may also dim your awareness of pain. We offer a number of sedation options so you can select the one best for you.

  • Oral sedation is a pill you take prior to visiting our office. It reduces your anxiety, putting you into a calm state.
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a popular dental sedation option. When you sit down in the chair for your procedure, you will be given enough nitrous oxide to put you into a relaxed and comfortable but conscious state
  • Intravenous sedation delivers the sedation medication directly to your bloodstream. It allows you to maintain your sedated state throughout a longer procedure. It may be slightly deeper than what you achieve with nitrous oxide, but you will still be conscious enough to respond to directions. You will likely remember little about your treatment.
