Self-ligating brackets are also called “speed braces.” There are no ligatures, or bands, that hold the wire in place. Instead, these braces have a locking mechanism in the bracket, which can be quickly opened and closed for archwire changes.

Passive Self-Ligating System

As your teeth move to a more straight position, the archwires are changed. In traditional braces, this archwire change can be very uncomfortable and painful to the patient. This is because of the tight bond of the bracket to the archwire. In self-litigating bracket systems, the strain on the teeth and the gums is minimized.
