Additional Dental Implant Information

In Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario

Dental implants are an increasingly popular alternative to traditional dentures or bridges to replace missing teeth. Implants are placed directly in your jawbone and support a natural-looking replacement tooth. With new technology used at Willow Dental in Mississauga, dental implants can be placed without invasive surgery or extensive healing intervals.

How Dental Implants Work

A dental implant is made up of a titanium screw with a prosthetic tooth attached to its top. Titanium is the metal of choice for implants because it naturally bonds to bone, providing a stable base for your new tooth or teeth. Because the implant bonds to the bone, it also helps stimulate the bone to grow normally. By contrast, dentures often result in bone loss in the jaw because they are unable to stimulate the normal growth process.

With today’s dental implant technology, an implant can place immediately after your damaged or worn tooth is extracted. These advances allow you to achieve functional, aesthetically appealing results from your dental implant procedure.

Candidacy for Dental Implants

Because dental implants are placed directly into the jawbone, a candidate for dental implants must have sufficient bone mass to support the implants. If you have been wearing dentures for a significant period of time, for example, you may have suffered bone loss that would prevent your jaw from properly supporting dental implants.

Our implant dentist, Dr. Neil Elman, can evaluate the bone mass of your jaw as well as your overall health to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. If bone mass is insufficient, surgical procedures such as bone grafting and even sinus lifts can prepare your jaw to receive implants. Adding bone to the jaw will ensure that your dental implants are stable and long lasting.
