What Are Dental Veneers?

As we age, our teeth become more and more worn down, stained, and dull. These are normal problems we all must face, however there are also lifestyle factors that can make tooth decay worse, such as drinking tea, coffee, or red wine, or using tobacco products. Some dental problems can even be develop from prior dental procedures. Dental veneers are always an option to help improve the look and health of your teeth.

Dental veneers are custom-designed shells that are cemented onto the front of your teeth. Veneers preserve the natural structure of the tooth, because they are simply bonded to the front, they are not fake teeth. Dental veneers fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry because they are used to improve the look of your teeth, but they also help improve the health of your teeth as well.

Despite the reason for the flaws in your teeth, dental veneers may be able to fix one or all of your dental issues, including:

  • Damaged or worn enamel. Enamel is the thin, white, hard substance that covers and protects our teeth. Over time our enamel can become soft and more susceptible to cracks, breaks or staining.
  • Age. Over time our teeth become worn out. Older teeth are more likely to be uneven, and have cracks.
  • Genetics. Some people are just born with dental flaws.
  • Uneven teeth. Uneven teeth are most likely caused by grinding.
  • Stained teeth. As mentioned above, as our teeth age they become susceptible to staining, but drinking or eating certain foods or using tobacco products also contribute to staining. Veneers can help restore the bright, white, natural look of your teeth.

Dental veneers are much less invasive than crowns, and can also provide more restoration than tooth whitening.
