Almost all of us has had a cavity in our lifetime that has required a filling. Most of us who received these fillings in prior years are more likely to have amalgam, or metal fillings, whereas today, there are other, much better alternatives. Tooth-colored, composite fillings are extremely advantageous when compared to metal fillings.
One major advantage of composite fillings is that they restore the original strength to your tooth. Composite fillings restore your original strength because they are bonded to the actual tooth. Silver, and other metal types, actually weaken the tooth, making it more susceptible to cracking and decay.
In addition, composite fillings is that they are tooth-colored, making them less visible, and restoring the natural look of your teeth, they require smaller holes to be made in order to fit the filling, and they are mercury free. Amalgam fillings require a large portion of the tooth to be removed in order for the filling to be placed, while composite fillings require a much smaller hole to be made. Another major advantage is that composite fillings do not make the tooth as sensitive to hot or cold, as metal fillings do. Also, metal fillings that have been used in previous years contain mercury, which is now known to be potentially toxic. Although they may be referred to as "silver fillings," there are actually many more metals in the filling material than just silver.
Composite fillings are a technological breakthrough in dentistry that now allow cavities to be filled with a safe, tooth-colored material, as opposed to the unsightly, inefficient metal fillings.
